Breaking into the Child Modeling Biz
By Sid | August 10, 2007
If you are attempting to get your child or baby into the modeling business, there are a few steps that you can take to get you started in the right direction. A certain degree of bull-doggedness is usually required when trying to break into the child model business, but if you have a child who is outgoing and playful, you just may have the next Brooke Shields on your hands!
On the other hand, you may be satisfied to enjoy a couple of fashion shows and a little print work and that’s it. It is important that you keep a good grip on reality and understand that the modeling business is fickle at best. Today’s next hot star is tomorrow’s has-been. Let it be fun and don’t take it too seriously.
Okay, with that said, let’s take a look at a couple of things you can do to get your youngster into the child modeling business.
Participate In Local Beauty Pageants
Beauty pageants are a great door-opener for the prospective child model because of the networking aspect. Beauty pageant moms always have their ear to the ground, scoping out new opportunities for their little ones. You can cash in on that by networking with them and finding out about casting calls and other prospects. Pageants are much different from fashion modeling, but pageants do have their strong points. Your child can win scholarships through pageants and he or she will gain some invaluable experience in being in front of crowds.
Scope out and Enter Your Child into Photo Contests
Photo contests are another great way to break into the child model world. You simply enter your child’s photo in the contest and often the photos are published. Some contests offer exposure opportunities while others will put you and your child in contact with agents. Exposure is your child’s best friend, especially if she or he wants to pursue a career in modeling so national photo contests are great. However, local contests can provide tear sheets to put in your child’s portfolio and they can lead to more print work or even runway and commercials.
There’s lots of helpful information available about how to get started in the child modeling business. Only after you take time to research and explore opportunities will you know if that cute, sweet baby of yours has what it takes to be a child model.
