Meals with the family ain’t what they used to be?
By Sid | August 6, 2007
So the atmosphere at home is ’stiff’. Everyone seems to be on the defensive of his/her point of view and you find yourself getting ever more up tight and angry.
It is time to learn how to chill out, take a step back and give yourself time to recover before the feelings emerge as externalized anger.
Family life can be hard at the best of times and down right impossible at others. It is not unusual for the expression of anger to take place following a progressive build up of stress in relation to the actions and/or comments of others and if this is how it happens to you then you need to realise that it is important for you to express your unhappiness with a particular situation and well before it becomes an angry problem.
Often those around you will do or say things without realising or thinking about how hurtful they can be and it is important for you to express how you feel at the time it happens and not to bottle it up for later.
Tell whoever has upset you that they have and also why.
Help them to understand what was unwelcome and also how things could have been approached without causing offence.
It is often surprising that such a straight forward process avoids conflict, builds understanding and facilitates improved communications for the future.
Try it… try communicating your feelings.
Be prepared to explore, be prepared to learn the others point of view too and be prepared for a calmer existence as a result of improved understanding, tolerance and mutual respect.
